" Lost " all seasons My take on it

Well I thought quite a lot if there was any point to it as the show is the very definition of the concept of perspective. Even then everybody likes a concrete ending and if this helps in making sense out of obscurity then I guess it would be totally worth it.

Every religion is based on one simple yet complex thought energy, the same principle that scientists  have tried to demystify and harness. We have even been able to do so to a large extend yet there are various loopholes that confuse even the brightest minds.

We know how energy works but we are yet to find out from where it comes or when was  the first time it came into existence. It is omnipresent at the same time invisible its power is infinite. It can either totally annihilate or magically create.

 This energy is at the very core of who we are  "the light is in every one of us but yet we want more " - jacob's mom

This whole world and beyond is weaved with it like a complex rug ( jacob and his mother are seen weaving a rug with threads ) every thread that crosses each other is a decision that is taken by the creator and that leads to the fabric being made, one stitch in another direction and the effect will be totally different.

Yet the thread is the same and the person who is weaving the fabric is the same. The outcome maybe different but the elements that create that outcome are the same.

Every character has made his or choices in life which lead them to be on the plane the fact that they are supposed to be together is inevitable because they are the threads chosen or we could say threads that have come together because of choices made by the weaver jacob ( representation of energy ? )  .

Physical Manifestation of the existing energy is maybe to some extend in our hands. Thats what we call cause and effect in science and as you so so shall you reap in spirituality.

There are no demons and there are no saints there is no angel and there is no devil. There are only choices which we make. We decide whether the fabric of our cloth is going to be red or green a straight stitch or cross.

Every darkness is a choice and every light is a choice also. ( jack struggles with choices throughout sometimes they are wrong and sometimes they are right...but its always a choice.

Every relationship of every character is a choice. The decision of sawyer to pull the wire on bomb is a choice )

The question whether they were alive when the crashed or not to me is irrelevant because it did not matter. The creators more than often throughout the season implied that our bodies are a mere casing for our soul and what matters most is that our soul makes the right choice.

We could also call it conscious......The mystery of the island is representative of  the mystery of the universe its amazing possibility and magic. The island a representation of that immense unexplainable magic which we see example gravity.

At the end of the day it teaches that no matter where you are,  your conscious does not leave you unless you make the necessary sacrifice in creating your fabric with the right color and right stitch and the bright light that burns inside you is what always tell you whether you are going in the right direction or not because if you dont then you will have to come to the drawing board again and again till you listen to the light and take the right direction. ( concept of rebirth ) To do that you cant let the black smoke talk to to you because he is best contained inside your island.

It does not matter what he wants you to do....ultimately you actions are what weave the fabric of your life he will always be  a part of you but you need to always choose the bright light that shines inside you and only then will you be able to walk towards that eternal light.

Desmond - Our life is a circle of choice and effect we may change how we look and where we are but the our ties with others never cease because they are part of our fabric of life. Sometimes they are with us and sometimes they are not because on the drawing board called life we make the right decisions and sometimes wrong. There is that one factor thou it could be a person, a incident or even a habit....which is always part of where and who we are..its what holds the fabric together on the drawing board and gives us the chance to come back again and again to it till we have perfected that rug and its complete.

I write about things I understand to write about kashmir is something that I believe is a right a non kashmiri does not have.Its a situation which is very complicated. Being able to see in a fog is nearly impossible. Kashmir is living in a fog of isolation, ignorance and even abuse.
All countrymen are my brothers and sisters is a proclamation easy to say than live.
Every government in power has fucked up from the moment we got independence to now.....
Except being gods gift to mankind Kashmir economically kashmir seems to be a pretty maiden who has nothing to offer but the serenity of her beauty and purity of soul. I guess which was not good enough for the custodians of bharat mata to haul up their skirts and go to war each and every time she was abused by those across the border and inside it too.
It is a college, a place of education , personally I do not understand the connection of politics and education...but even if a child says something stupid you do not haul his ass to the police station.
They have been forfeited by their countrymen and their country why do you then expect them to have a sense of patriotism ? what are we doing for them even now ?
Infrastructure is still a long way... and daily life includes the fear for life itself. So some guys got all rilled up, when you have nothing to live by except a sense of hatred for the most basic rights denied to you , A explosive reaction full of hatred is something that you should not be surprised about....
If all my countrymen are my brothers and sisters then before you get all agitated about things said about your country first find out what your fellow countrymen are going through and what you can do about it...If you cant do anything then support them while they fight for their basic right to be heard.....even if its a philosophy you dont understand....
Terrorism exists as a answer to fear and desperation......It wont when the answer is understanding, solidarity.....

My beef with you.....I guess Frogs will have to do

I am scared to post a picture of a lovely beef stake that I ate in Bali. A free citizen of my country and my heart flutters thinking of the repercussions which could be violent. The death of a person for eating meat is something that is still difficult to digest. Along with the fact that a public out cry was needed to make arrests.
This smell of riots that tore Mumbai apart fills the air and our hearts and I wonder how far are we from that one matchstick which will set thousands of innocents on fire because the government is not taking the necessary steps to dampen the ambers of hatred.
It is completely beyond me why would any government in its  sane mind allow a situation to exist which in the long run could lead to wide spread violence is a cow more important that a person ?
In a secular society why is there any space for religious preference.....

India continues to be one the leading beef exporters in the world, so it s quite possible that the beef I ate in Bali came from India. Now I wonder what sort of logic is applied to this beef law passed on religious sentiments in India and what exactly is its goal ? sentimental or business ? more beef more export hence more money to the business owners.

Maybe we need to start eating frogs tasty creatures tried them will they be cheap ?

Dandiya one of the most colorful and cosmopolitan festivals in India is now tainted with anti communal sentiment. In Gujarat Muslims and Christians are not allowed to participate unless they convert.
The fact that something like this has been said is not surprising the fact that no action has been taken against VHP is what has surprised me the most.....

I am a Indian my culture my soil is very dear to me. I am also a christian. My faith and my Nationality have nothing to do with each other. I have been proud of my country, the so called lifestyle of the first world countries has never appealed to me.

But today I wonder what kind of future does my country offer me ? My heart pumps faster than needed as I write this post....one filled with fear and hatred where Indians are being manipulated like puppets and sacrificed at the alter of politics.

DROUGHT, TAXES, WOMEN'S SAFETY AND MY WEIGHT

All this talk about development seems to be completely wasted on me right now. I will not say that I was fan of this new government but everybody deserves a chance and so did this new bull in the pit.

The drought that has hit farmers and the silence adopted has made it very clear that  the new big boss is only interested in helping those rich babus who live in multi billion dollar high rises.

The roads are not better, jobs are not available, 500 bucks for a handfull of veggies dont know what poor people eat to live and if all this was not enough the once in a blue moon vacation, movie and dinner is so shit expensive that we wait for the moon to turn green.

We pay a hell lot of tax which is supposed to help put food on our table by keeping those who grow food  alive. Unless there is some conspiracy of import from a friendly neighbor or there is a smart cheap dangerous alternative which is cooking in backroom deals. 

I mean hunger is something I could digest....certainly would help the weight but what I certainly cannot digest is the crazy rise of rape cases not only in the  Delhi but across India. What the fuck is going on .

Man seriously I could certainly live with less technology, less foreign funding and less big steel towers but I certainly cannot live without by dignity no thank you. Cant they just focus on solving this one big problem right now .

Or is women safety one of those non issues like the right to celebrate a important festival by eating what we like . The prime reason for the failure of the previous government and rise of the current if anybody has forgotten was exactly this WOMEN'S SAFETY not fancy buildings, or a roaring stock market or a beef ban ( which I wonder what problem does it exactly solve  safety, jobs or the dismal inflation) 

 If slaughtering animals is insensitive polluting the environment and wasting money in community religious cerebration when people are dying in the state is insensitive too. Nobody banned that !  

Why I am a christian and a LGBT supporter

Today I broke my relationship with my church in support of Lgbt rights and because they were preaching against it. By doing so I saved my relationship with christ.

What makes it so difficult for people to understand and accept the lgbt community. I have never given this question much thought until my church decided to go and speak out against the bill that awards gay people the right to marriage.

The bible talks about homosexuality in few random versus and that is enough for the community to be delegated to the sinful box. The bible as any other religious book is written by men over a period of time and under various political and social transformations. Taking every word and verse in context is probably not a very responsible thing to do. But then if it was responsible  it wouldn't exactly be  a religion. Religion sings to the masses spirituality appeals to the individual soul.

I am a practicing believer of christ. He is my spiritual master and I try and follow his teachings and the road which he etched for us through his teachings.Christ has always preached acceptance and love. The only rule he ever had was love one another. He loved the moneylender and prostitute alike. He did not judge then and he does not judge now. If we are the new age believers of christ then the only rule that we need to remember is about unconditional love.

He died on the cross for everybody irrespective of their caste, creed or sexual preference. He preached the power of the conscience his only rule was to love , to do unto another as you would like to be done unto you.

As christains we believe that judgement is only god's then who are we to judge and say that being LGBT is wrong. Who are we to take away their fundamental rights ? it is his and only his to judge.

Preaching against another fellow being is sin, causing him angst and trauma is sin you are a human hence any step taken to punish another is sin.

Why do we forget this one basic principle . Marriage is a legal process which man has  linked to the spiritual. Who are we to deny people their basic legal rights ? 

I do not support those who take on themselves to lable others as living in sin just because they do not understand or associate with their choices.  I believe in following only christ and I can do that by loving and accepting my fellow humans without question and judgement and knowing that judgemnet is only his.

India a land of politicians for politicians -in light of Amended IT Act 66A

India has always been a country of contrasts the hypocrisy of it is what we have gotten used to.Religion is the most used and abused tool of political choice and yet the common man has been grappling with laws that put a restriction on his very basic right of speech.

Section 66A of the IT Act 2011 very vaguely says

a) any information that is grossly offensive or has menacing character; orb) any information which he knows to be false, but for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred or ill will, persistently by making use of such computer resource or a communication device,c) any electronic mail or electronic mail message for the purpose of causing annoyance or inconvenience or to deceive or to mislead the addressee or recipient about the origin of such messages shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and with fine.
Two years and a few arrests later the law today is amended not due to the efforts by the opposition or by the Information Technology bodies which house the who's of who of the industry but due to the efforts by the common man who was grossly affected by them.

We are a secular  republic with the right to speak our minds though the only people who seem to be able to do it are the politicians . The original constitution gave the common man the right to free speech no questions  asked the law was then amended by the congress to serve only one purpose "Political " the rising left and their questions including the then active and unbiased press  which questioned the administration for its stand on the partition was conveniently silenced.

Today the press plays only for TRPS where the moghul clout of one media entity can totally overthrow the voice of another with sheer bullying.

Today the only person who can speak his mind about religion is the politician who rallies votes based on this very fact. If we are to stand by the below law the whole existence of religion based political identity could be unconstitutional.

Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage reli­gious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.—Whoever, with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class of ²⁷³ [citizens of India], ²⁷⁴ [by words, either spoken or written, or by signs or by visible representations or otherwise], insults or attempts to insult the religion or the religious beliefs of that class, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 4[three years], or with fine, or with both.]

The right to identity cannot be based on a political parties manifesto, it is one of the most basic right to freedom and which Section 377 clearly violates . Unnatural offences: Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.This law is British era old in a country which has  a rich culture of tolerance in its history and mythology this law should have been done away a long time ago, it exists today in the form a political identity insync with a religious cultural sentiment of our existing government.Why the hell our we paying crazy tax for ? so that we are slaves to the political games of every party in power, if we have to drag our asses out to petition to fight for our most basic rights what is the government doing in the first place if we agree with the fact that they have no time to think about these things because they are busy making the rich people rich what is the opposition doing sitting in parliament have we not elected our local Politicians so that we dont have to fight for our basic rights ? or are they too busy plotting and planning so that in the next five years they can make the rich people more rich ? 

Missing Children a National Epidemic

Recently my facebook page has a photo of a missing child every second day, the sweet innocent
face haunts me for a very long time. I shudder just thinking of the hell that child will be put through. Prostitution, organ harvest, mutilation, child labor the list of hell is endless.
What is going wrong ? Is this generation of parents reckless or is the current law and order toothless and more lazy than the last. According to the baccha bachao andolan nearly ELEVEN CHILDREN GO MISSING  EVERY HOUR in India. These statistics are as old as 2011 so this is not a new story the only difference is the common man has a facebook account.
The mind has the ability to ignore what it wants  hence even when train stations and bus depots are lined with posters of missing children we ignore it.
This is our reality we live in the shadow of fear, of waking up and finding our child gone, will you ever be able to breath again..... The political machinery of our country is busy planning and executing a dream world of riches which will come from strengthening the multinational corporate universe  and a strong take on subsidies. On the other hand the country is sitting on a boiling pot of religious sentiment. A blind eye to the crumbling secular fabric of the country seems to be the moto.
The police in this country and under payed and overworked not news and the current situation does not help.
The question is very simple is all this foreign investment in India going to make our country safe for you and for me. Children have been going missing in villages for  along time nobody has bothered to ask questions because it does not affect us. Today the epidemic has reached our doorstep.
We can never live a isolated life, the waters will always reach your shore.
The grief of the farmer is not yours, but when there is no land to plough, where are these villages going to go ? What are we going to eat ???? a very expensive commodity imported ?
If we cant afford it will these people ? what are they going to do ? with no skill there is always the easy way out.... Crime.... How many police officers do we have ? not enough.....
Our priorities cannot be just about what we want... lower interest rate so that we can buy a bigger home ? foreign investment for a better job ? all this will amount to nothing if one day you wake up and a piece of you is missing.

Scientology, Us and Him

It is no new fact that religion is the biggest high on this planet. This invisible shield of security created by affirmation of a unseen kind has the strength to build out of nothing and break into nothing.

Science has a explanation for everything from cause to effect. Yet they come and stop at the very beginning. In every religion the existence of pure is emphasized a million times its this pure which brings calm to the storm which is our life.

Scientology talks about the same pure energy and we a experiment gone awry like a artificial intelligence which was created and then usurped the original existence too. Its the same concept Greeks, Indian, Europeans all talk about the same concept of the universe beginning from one pure thought and then getting muddled into a mass of filth which we are.

I would like to believe that I am a spiritual person my foundation is my belief in a entity who knows all and has seated in me a conscience which is my guiding light. As India grapples with the sickness of barbaric rape of not only women but children I once again come and stand at the same crossroad of why would a god who so loved the world that he sacrificed his only son let this happen.

Somewhere deep down my day begins with the thought what if something happens to me that breaks this cocoon of belief around me, what if one day I wake up and face the stark reality that we are all part of "truman show"

Do spiritual people even question ?  In this life when you are a whirling mass of emotions, contradictions, habits and compulsions the most important commodity is the calm that presides over your heart. The effect zen of babaji ki booti twenty four seven without any side effects. 

The taking away of this zen can be a very alarming circumstance. Though I strongly believe that any individual who resorts to being an asshole in the name of this zen has not found it. That is just another story of ego and manipulation.

Cause and effect is what this whole world stands on, science and religion both come and agree on this one point, karma, as you so so shall you reap, the cause and effect we understand is justified the ones we dont are not.

In these millions of years that we roam the planet, our actions are multiplied a number I cant even arrive at. What can be cause of what we do today ? actions in these few years or the millions that we have been part of. Many religions do not believe in the being reborn, Some believe that we are born again through our belief in god and that sets all things right.

Cant it be possible that the poor god " Maker " of us gave us more credit than we deserve. He could not ever imagine that after showing us the easy way to do things we still would want to go and do the shit that gets us into trouble. We may get better but getting completely cured is a long way ahead.

The hangovers have reduced to once a year from every weekend but they are still there, the whiskey is replaced by wine and not water.

The virus in our system is pretty deep and maybe it may take a few more years for it to be weened out. But we need to have faith, in ourselves and that maker who took a huge risk by making us against all fore warnings. Making us in his image, giving us his breath of life which attached him to us forever. Shit can go out of his hand because of the complex threads of cross connections we have created by refusing to clean up fast, but he still tries, sometimes he cant help us and has to stand at the sidelines as we bear the effect, but it does not mean that it hurts him less after all there is a part of him in us.

Our faith should not stand on a rainmaker our faith should stand on a path which takes us to the rainmaker, a road which is a long difficult journey ridden with obstacles some which we know of some of which we are not aware about. Our faith is the thread in the den on the centaur which will get us out to the light. In that journey we will find shade in the calmness of loving clouds and sometimes there will be nothing but scorching heat. In these moments we need to remember the joy of rain on the journey and the fact that if it exists at the end of the storm there will be a rainbow.

When it becomes a everyday affair it becomes routine. The rapes, murder and the blatant disregard for a woman's life. It is a every day affair, nobody cares a damn but the moment a group of men use expletives against people who were perfectly fine about it there is hell an uproar.
Why the hell do you blame the government only ? you are sick in your head. India has a rich culture of diverse literature which was never hauled up in moral court before.
Why is it happening now. Is our education system failing ? are our children not brought up to think for themselves to appreciate the existence of a plethora of creative expression. Are we bringing up opinionated idiots who in this day and age of shortcuts dont want to invest in expanding their understanding of this universe and are satiated with being told " what the nation wants to know " at 9p.m every night and that becomes their opinion. Or they tag the line of the next trending opinion left or right doesnt matter.
When a nation stops thinking and tows the line being preached without individual thought that is when we know that hell is just a few miles away.
Hitler was able to do what he did because the people towed his line without a independent thought. In this day and age when the worlds knowledge is at your finger tips we are so engrossed in that virtual candy on your phone that we are not able to find ten minutes to read the newspaper.
Knowledge makes us human without the philosophy of elevated thought without the foundation of intellectual hunger  we are nothing but animals. A fact which is emphasized daily when men haul and tear apart a human being to satiate their basic needs.

The man turned a child in a bore well into breaking news within a spam of four hours. An event which was not even news turned into breaking news which was covered by all leading news channels. With Times Now "Getting there first ".

The IAS Umashankar ' Exclusive ' is Arnab shaking up a very boring news day and deciding in a very long edit meeting the "breaking news on Newhour " . A man who has been preaching for three years against death threats and attacks suddenly finds himself in the midst of A political controversy. Every journalist worth his salt must have knon him and his extreme views and of course his work. They must have even reported the on and off attacks on him.

But it takes the genius of AG to take the old been there forever fact and turn it into breaking news.

So one fine day the man is invited to say what he will obviously say  and few minutes, flashy graphics later Viola we have breaking news !!!

What he says is far fetched as far fetched as god being in an idol or the concept of mata ka bulawa or Reiki. As a Indian faith is a very strong part of who we are, why is this man's faith so difficult to digest ? because he is a christian ? 

The current government flies saffrom proud. The shudhikaran of Christians by BJP MP'S or even 25th December as Governance day hardly got any eyeballs. A over zealous government officer who talks about his belief in his spare time suddenly is news of the day.

If anybody is raking up religious sentiment is this very government. Three years his work was not news nor did the government think he was violating any laws.DID YOU HEAR ABOUT HIM BEFORE  ? If a BJP MP can propagate his belief in his spare time despite being in office  this dude surely can. I wonder whats wrong with this government don't they know they are screwing their own cause.

Honey Singh is in rehab according to rumormongers ! good for him if he is. When the hell are we going to stop being so judgmental. Its a tough world, it is so bloody difficult for us middle class folks who have a set job, a house and no aspirations of owing a Mercedes.
The bhav of tamatar is good enough to drive us to depression. The world of glamour is a mirage of beauty, the possibility of earning a lot and the fear of losing it all. When ego is driving our mundane life's of nearly nothingness we cannot even begin to fathom the hazy world of money, power and fame.
Why are we so quick to judge others when the fact is we bloody cant afford cocaine and more than often alcohol has been the poison we have chosen to drown our sorrows in. A fact we more than often hide behind the wall of  parties and 2 am friends.
Substance abuse is a truth as flesh trade. A fact which is left to be archived in the dusty logs of a NGO or government body.
According to a UN report, One million heroin addicts are registered in India, and unofficially there are as many as five million. That is reality.... as real as these stars who struggle with their own demons and resort to that thing which makes their life better even if it is as momentary as few seconds.
A substance abuser more than often succumbs to the hell of mental disorder, accepting that he has a problem is next to impossible. Their physical and mental capabilities are majorly compromised, due to which they do not have the strength to make rational choices.
It takes a lot of struggle and a huge effort for a person to accept that he has a problem, More than often we don't have it in us to even change our basic fucked habits.
Its high time we mind our own business and stop judging people celebrity or not. Get your ass online first ! road rage, house rage , work rage deal with that first. Next time you pick up a drink because you are mindfucked try not to and then sit on your high horse and judge

It took a very sassy lass like Deepika Padukone to come out and say that I battled depression and anxiety. The avalanche of divorces which have hit our social fabric are a standing proof of the rising epidemic that we as a society face today.

Somewhere down the line the inability to make true marriage has been chalked out to rising selfishness . The ability to put somebody else before yourself  is tough. What went missing is a learning curve which kicked your ass and taught you to deal with it. Lekin Kabhi na Kabhi toh bada hona hai. There will be a day when you will have to take the plunge because your ass has become big and does not fit in the nest.

There is no option but to make another one and there starts the trauma of making a choice. From not having anything to lose you have shitloads and your brain does not know how to decide what to do.
It gets so overwhelming at times that life itself begins to feel worthless. Damn writing this itself is making me feel depressed.

Nobody tells you that growing up is about making choices and having the guts to stand with their consequences. That is where the first of fear raises its head. Everything seems unfair and so bloody tough. Nobody tells you what to do including your parents.

Marriage and kids the most basic of  elements turn out to be monsters ready to eat you alive. Idhar khudh ke wande hai unka kya karu. Being alone seems to be its own hell. Nobody tells you  growing old cant be done alone.

Itna dimag ka dhai hoga toh your brain is going to freeze. Depression is that freeze which refuses you the choice of making a informed choice. Not everybody can be selfish yaar and not everybody can be jackass with anger problems. Something is obviously wrong. The neighborhood psychologist is the easy answer which everybody seems to be blind to.

You rather swim in a world of pain, destroy your relationships, disintegrate your life rather than spend one hour with a man or woman who will give you the pill or gyaan to ease the pain much like your local doc who sorts your aches and pains which he mostly writes up to stress.

While I empathise with some of your views, there are a few errors in your post which I'd like to point out before proceeding further. This is unsurprising as almost 150 years of strict gun control has meant that not many Indians know about this issue. So lets set the record straight before we begin to examine the main theme of your post.

This statement implies that civilian gun ownership a primary contributing factor in multiple victim killings/ shootings - is simply NOT TRUE! Anyone with an INTENT to create mayhem can and usually does find the means to carry out his/ her intentions. You really underestimate the ingenuity of human beings, if someone really wishes to do something - they usually find a way to do it AND if they really want something - they usually find a way to procure it! You can see the example of China and Japan where there have been instances of multiple victim killings using knives and even poison gas, look at France where there is no legal way to own an automatic rifle and yet the terrorists who shot those journalists at Charlie Hebdo got hold of Klashnikovs to carry out their attack. Closer home you need to just think back to 26/11 when a small group of terrorists held an entire city to ransom - despite the strict Indian gun laws!

On the other hand Switzerland, New Zealand and most Nordic countries have extremely high gun ownership rates but low crime rates and negligible instances of multiple victim shootings.

Conversely, in situations where citizens have the right to be armed and attackers faced one/ more armed civilians the overall death tolls (in such instances) have been substantially lower than in places where all of the victims were unarmed.

I'm no expert in human psychology but you seem to completely discount religious/ political fanatics who, in their own mind, seem to see perfect logic in their dastardly actions.

EXCELLENT POINT! I agree completely. Once something has been invented, short of 'un-inventing' it (if there were such a thing), you can rest assured if there is a demand for it there will be suppliers - the laws be damned! This holds true for pretty much everything any government has ever tried to ban - alcohol, drugs, books, etc. The problem really is, that once something is banned the only ones who abstain from it are the law abiding folk who wish to remain within the purview of the law. The criminals, terrorists, fanatics never have and never will care about what is written in the statute books! Ergo, gun control disarms the victims not the perpetrators.

If a person wants to kill he will find the means and ways to do it.

Now to the estimates of guns owned by civilians in India. The figures you have mentioned come from the Small Arms Survey, Geneva. Allow me to let you on to a little secret, those figures are absolute rubbish! The way it happened was:

SAS was compiling data for all countries and they realised that they had absolutely no data for India. So like all good statisticians they 'extrapolated'. They took the available figures for total illegal firearms confiscated by government forces in India (this included confiscations in terror affected areas like J&K, NE, etc), assumed that for every illegal firearm confiscated X times that number went undetected and arrived at a guess as to the total number of illegal firearms in circulation here. Then they took that as a base and 'guessed' how many legal firearms are in circulation in India. They added to two guesses and voilà!

At the time they came up with those estimates, they did not even have an office or a single employee/ consultant working in India! These guesses were all made sitting in Geneva. IIRC one or two publications picked up on their data and ran short stories, and like good Indians once we see something in print we readily & unquestioningly assume it to be true.

The reason why it is so difficult to even know the total number of legal firearms in India is (because as a Federal nation) the Arms Act is administered by the State Governments (rightfully so as law & order is a state subject). Due to the licensing data (usually not digitised in most places) being spread over the various districts of various states, there is no central data repository of wherein one can pull out a figure of the total number of arms license holders in India.

In 2008 the number of people who died due to a gun in India were 6219

First up, NO ONE EVER died DUE TO a gun ANYWHERE in the world! While guns may have been used as tools in the commission of murder or other crimes, like any other inanimate object they don't CAUSE crime. While it is not possible, nor am I qualified to go into a dissertation on the root causes of crime, suffice to say crime is a manifestation of and caused by the prevailing socio-economic conditions in a place.

Conversely, when victims/ potential victims are armed with guns, crime & criminals can and is/ are more often than not effectively deterred/ stopped.

Also, for the sake of presenting the whole picture may I mention that (as per NCRB figures) between 2003-07 LEGAL firearms were involved in 1.62% - 2.33% of all murders, this figure includes self-defence shootings as in India when a firearm is used in self-defence they are more often than not initially recorded as 'murder'. Conversely between 76% - 86% of murders were committed using means other than firearms (poison, blunt objects, sharp objects, etc.). Illegal firearms were involved in 13% - 21% murders, this would include shootings in disturbed areas where terrorists/ Naxals operate.

Furthermore, just looking at the statistics for murder doesn't paint a complete picture of violent crime in India. While murders hover at between 33,000 - 35,000 per year, other violent crime like robbery, rape, dakoity, murder, etc. account for millions of victims each year. In all such crimes, where a gun is used - it is an illegal firearm procured from the black market!

Your wanting to arm yourself to actively protect yourself in stead of relying on the state to do so is sensible. Rape is a social malaise and isn't going to go away simply because we have a new law on the books.

(a) It is fine to make laws, but one must understand that laws only serve to prosecute the perpetrators of such violence, but do nothing to PREVENT the crime. Also, it is a misconception that stricter laws act as a deterrent. It has been proven time and again that criminals never expect to be apprehended and thus do not overly worry about the legal consequences of their actions. Strict laws and severe penalties may help assuage our collective feeling of guilt (of letting down the victim) & societies 'demand for vengeance' but neither of these outcomes help PREVENT the crime.

(b) There are always calls for better policing/ police reform/ judicial reform etc., which without doubt is a need not just for women but for all citizens. However, the fact is that no police force can be everywhere all at once! An effective & efficient police/ judicial system can act as a deterrent to some extent, but that is where it ends. In the overwhelming number of cases the police by its very definition and nature must content itself to investigating the crime AFTER THE FACT and attempting to bringing the guilty to justice. Once again this does not PREVENT the crime.

(c) Learning how to safely & effectively use a gun and carrying it for self defence, is one of the most effective PREVENTIVE steps that a woman can take to ensure her own safety. One must understand though, that this or any other steps that a woman may choose to take for this purpose underlines (more than anything else) her choosing NOT to BE A VICTIM. However, in India the Government has created a system which ensures that this will practically never happen. How?

(1) Firstly the Government has transformed the arms licensing system (from one which was envisaged in the Arms Act 1959 to be a free and fair one) into an obtuse and humiliating process which ensures that it is usually impossible for any law abiding citizen (with no criminal record and who does not wish to/ cannot resort to "favour") to acquire an arms license.
(2) By giving IOF a monopoly on the manufacture of handguns/ rifles and not permitting private manufacture or imports - the government has created a situation where handguns manufactured by as corrupt and inefficient an organisation such as IOF for less than 10,000/- are sold by them to the public for prices ranging from 80,000/- to over 1,00,000/-. On top of that their quality is shoddy and designs are nothing but copies of 100 year old designs! If private manufacture was allowed, it would not be difficult for someone to produce a much better handgun for between 4,000-5,000 Rupess (the cost of an ordinary cellphone), at which price one could ACTUALLY expect women to arm themselves in great numbers.

(d) If a woman is carrying a firearm and is accosted by one/ more criminals, the very act of her pulling out a firearm WITH the clear intent to use it in self-defence is usually enough in most cases for the criminal to beat a hasty retreat! This clearly PREVENTS crime! Even in the case that the attackers persist in their attack, it is logical that an armed woman at least has SOME chance of fighting off the attack as opposed to an unarmed helpless victim who can simply beg for mercy, mercy which is unfortunately never forthcoming!

(e) If even 10 or 20% of women were able and willing to arm themselves, it would be of great benefit not only to them but to ALL WOMEN in India! Why? Because, once word got around that a certain number of women were armed, there would be no way for a criminal to tell which ones were armed and which were not. As a result it would be a dangerous risk for them to attack any woman.

At the end of the day we must ask ourselves as a nation - do we wish a full half of our citizens to remain helpless victims? Or in this the land where we worship Durga as the vanquisher of evil, do we have the courage and good sense to arm & train our sisters/ daughters/ mothers/ wives/ colleagues so that they do not have to look to others for their basic human right of a safe & dignified life.

I would like to point you to an academic study which has examined this topic in great detail - "Dangerous Women": Feminism, Self-Defense, and Civil Rights by Robert L. Barrow JD. and Gary Mauser Ph.D.http://www.sfu.ca/~mauser/papers/women/Law-review-abstract.pdf. While this study was conducted in USA, it is as pertinent to the situation here as human nature is universal. I doubt that anyone who really cares about women safety can remain unmoved after reading it. It isn't a very long read, pertinent to the subject and well worthwhile.

You are misinformed about the current situation in USA. Gun sales have been at an all time high there for the past several years, within which are a very large percentage of first time buyers and women buyers. In fact women gun owners are the fastest growing demographic, with more and more women choosing effective self-defence over becoming victims. If you read the latest figures released by the FBI, you will note that high gun sales have gone hand in hand with a rapid decline in violent crime figures nationwide.

Also, since you refer again to multiple victim shootings popularly termed in the press as 'mass shootings'. While these are horrific acts and deserve condemnation, please note that despite the media hype you have far a higher chance of being killed by a wild bear in USA than of becoming a victim in any such shooting there. Also, despite a high ownership of guns the No. 1 'weapon' used in the maximum number of murders year on year is... the baseball bat!

There is no such thing as a semi-automatic assault weapon. An assault rifle is defined as one using an intermediate size cartridge and being capable of FULL AUTO fire. If it is semi-auto it simply IS NOT an assault rifle. Also, while on paper it is true that a citizen may procure a license for a semi-auto rifle, such licenses are issued ONLY by the Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi and are issued in very rare cases.

Actually only specific calibres are restricted (those used by security forces), all other calibres are permitted. However, ammunition is available only for certain calibres so that automatically restricts choice.

What can a woman expect when applying for an arms license? Usually they are harassed at their interview with the Licensing Authority. They are asked to prove grave & verifiable threat before their application will be considered. Which woman receives a prior "verifiable" threat in advance from criminals? Maybe a VVIP or VIP would receive such threats, but not an ordinary citizen! Almost all applicants are made to furnish details of property/ income, even though this practice is expressly forbidden under Section 14 (2) of the Arms Act 1959.

They are also discouraged by making them feel inferior - telling them that they should not even consider purchasing a gun as they could not possibly handle it or it may be snatched away from them. Well, if it is so easy to snatch a loaded gun then won't they be able to snatch it right back? Or why then do the police carry guns? Won't those be snatched too? So we should disarm the entire police force first?

The police are supposed to verify your details as furnished in your application and also whether or not you fall under any of the categories of persons referred to in Section 9 of the Act as prohibited from owning/ possessing a firearm. Neither can the police be mind readers NOR should we attribute to them any such magical powers. No person planning a crime, even an insane person would go through the humiliating procedure of arms license application, get his & the guns details on record and then pay many times the amount of what an illegal, untraceable gun would cost on the black market!

Ray Of Hope

what do you do.Most of the time you disintegrate.The rock near the sea slowly breaks away beaten consistently by the gushing waves. Then we are fragile humanbeings made from soil and gifted the breath of life. Yet somewhere there is the desire to fight, there is hope that tommorrow will bring with it a new beginning a new sunrise. As paul Coelho aptly coins the term
warriors of light. Infact I will say we are warriors for that light. Our life is a ongoing struggle to walk towards it fighting aagainst the darkness that constantly tries to edge its way into our existance. But then comes a time when there is no energy left in you when hope itself deserts you and you are left with no option but to accept your fate.
They say that its a matter of those few seconds between winning and losing. I hate losing and life
has been a fight to win. But through every second of that struggle god has stood by me today he may have seem to have deserted you . Tommorrow is uncertain, today a lonely disaster. They say that when it gets very dark morning is just around the corner. This night refuses to passaway and with the prolonged darkness the ray of hope gets a little lost in the impending gloom, In that moment when all seems lost you find the strength to take that step that blooms into a leap of faith. In that second the whole of divinity resides.

I WANT A GUN !

The horror stories that find their way in the media are always about random acts of violence. People killing other people just because they have access to a weapon, the thought behind the killing itself is always random. There is no logic; people who mass murder are pure crazy.

The Paris killings are a prime example of what mad men with a gun can do. Somehow anywhere in the world it is pretty easy to get a gun.

If a person wants to kill he will find the means and ways to do it.

The estimated total number of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in India is 40,000,000¹

The estimated rate of private gun ownership (both licit and illicit) in India is 3.36 firearms per 100 people

Unlawfully held guns cannot be counted, but in India there are estimated to be 33,700,000

In a classification of the world's small, medium and major firearm manufacturers, India is ranked 'medium'

That is a bloody lot of guns. The gun dynamics of India is divided between North and then the rest. It is quite easy to get a gun in that part of our world. UP, Bihar, Haryana are gun trotting districts. So my question is if it is easy to get one there then its easy to bring it here.

That makes me want a gun ! the gun control debate in the united states of America has been a ongoing saga for a very long time. Gun control to them is what religion is to us . A nerve which when hit right gets you votes.

The random killings which have been striking fear in the hearts of the till now gun friendly nation have been turned into a reason for stringent gun control the party who supports that is called the Democratic Party The party which is against stringent control is the republic party.

When a nation who rakes in quite a lot of money from making and selling guns is fighting for less Guns, does changing India’s stringent stand make sense ?

Whether you can or not own a gun is decided by your local cops. One has to think twice before even going and talking to them. I don’t know how comfortable or how much money I would need to feed them to even obtain one.

Officially this is how you can get  gun in India

Submit an application in form 'A' with Rs. 5/- Court fees stamp to the local police station

The Police station makes an enquiry and submits the report to             the Zonal DCP in Commissionerates and SPs in districts. The applicants are then interviewed by the DCP or DM  (as the case may be). Once convinced, the licensing authority (CP or DM)issues the license. 

That is easier said than done.  Why cant we have like a proper government office for the same like the passport office considering that the documents needed to get a gun are those that are needed to get a passport. The police can verify if you are a killer or not later after the paper work is under process just like how the verify your existence before the goverment issues you a passport !

The hurdles that you have to jump to get a gun do not involve a psych evaluation.  It would be a great idea to make that compulsory. I mean if you have violent maniac tendencies who better to catch hold of that than a shrink who is better than a cop deciding solely whether you can get one or not.

I don’t need a automatic firing at a crazy speed gun, I need a one which can shoot a single bullet which would kill that asshole who thinks it is perfectly fine to rape.

If the government can’t fix this epidemic of rape at least they should help us protect our honor.

GDP, Per Capita and us - a thought by a rebellious non mather

The stock  market is a complex breathing living mechanism it decides the fate of a nation and its people living it. For a layman the logic is simple you buy at a low cost and sell at a high cost. The investment happens in a company who is producing a product and your fate gets tied to that company. If they are making money invariably you make money.The fact that a lot of people are making money means that the country these people live in is making money.

That is when our GDP which counts how much stuff we are producing with how much stuff is pretty good. Nobody talks about sale, I guess we just assume that if we are producing we are selling and even if we are selling to who exactly doesn't matter. If most of what we make is sold out of our country then how can we deduce that a majority of our country is earning enough when they are not buying.
The new government is brandishing a good report card with a 5.5 percent GDP that means we are doing good and the fact that the oil prices are falling and commodity prices are tagging along is painting a very good picture in the press.
Per Capita is the money that a average Indian earns currently it is 5729 ! And the average Indian is mostly male who supports a family of at least four !
Every day India loses 2000 farmers every day, 12 farmers die everyday and I am not going to get into the malnourished numbers.
Education, Sanitation, Electricity basic needs which lay barren in a growing India. Markets are making money and we are supposed to be happy, poetry, art , literature are bowing down to numbers, there is no value for quality rather there is no money for it.
The equation between the stock market and the health of a nation is difficult for me to understand.
Then again for a literature graduate who is not fond of the multiplication table equations are difficult to understand .
